Learn Before You Decide
For anyone who has not previously shared life with a Scottish Terrier, here is some information about this wonderful breed. Scotties are independent and strong willed, and intelligent and independent thinkers. Despite their independence, they are sensitive and loyal to their owners. Scotties can be challenging to train, not because they are not quick and intelligent, but because they may have a different ‘opinion’, although positive training techniques with the use of clickers are highly effective and enjoyable for both the dog and the owners. Avoid extended periods of training – you will find your Scottie does better with short, positive and fun, lessons.
HeatherBee Kennels is proud to announce that Gordon Setters have been added to our family. Another breed originating in Scotland (alongside the Scottish Terriers and Golden Retrievers we have the pleasure of sharing life with) and this breed has been a longtime interest. This is a dream come true as we introduce Gracie, Robyn and Weaver! Developed in Scotland, the Gordon Setter was stabilized by Alexander, the fourth Duke of Gordon, between 1770 and 1820. His purpose was to create a larger, heavier setter to adapt to the rugged Scottish countryside. It’s rumoured that some Collie and Bloodhound genes went into the Gordon’s makeup. It was a Gordon that won at the world’s first dog show ,held in Britain in 1859. However, it should be noted that the competition was limited to Pointers and setters. In Britain, the Gordon Setter was among the first 46 breeds to be officially recognized and the breed was imported to this continent as early as 1840.
Oldest of the three Poodle breeds, the Standard is the original from which the Miniature and Toy were developed. Known in Russia and Germany since the early 16th century, the breed is related to the Portuguese Water Dog and Irish Water Spaniel. Though its first job was that of a retriever of waterfowl, the versatile Poodle was used in France to scent out truffles, a mushroom-like delicacy. In time, the breed’s sense of fun and high trainability made it popular as a circus dog and by the end of the 18th century, it was said every travelling circus had a performing Poodle act.
According to the Golden Retriever Club of Canada, the breed was originally developed in Scotland in the mid-19th century as a bird hunting dog able to retrieve land and water fowl. Goldens eventually made an appearance in Canada in the 1920’s, where their beautiful appearance, exceptional temperament and their sturdy, muscular stature made them excellent working dogs.

Testimonials
It’s hard to believe Dexter has only been with us for four months! Our yorkie, Brooklyn, has warmed up to him and they don’t mind having a nap together. We just love watching him grow and learn new things. It’s just amazing how smart he is and how quickly he learns a new trick or a command. My personal favourite is his play dead since he gets really into it and is fairly dramatic. He is incredibly social and loves both people and other dogs; with all the covid restrictions in place we started to send him to daycare once a week so he can learn to socialize appropriately and have his fill of playtime. He absolutely loves going and wrestling with his best friend Tuxedo! He also loves playing fetch, tug of war, walks, and couch cuddles
Koda who is a graduate of his puppy class! Such long legs at this age!
Heatherbee's Sir William Wallace, Will for short! With travel challenging during COVID times, it took him awhile to make it home, but he's there now! He lives in Antigonish, Nova Scotia.
Margaret and Ruby Toosday on the beach in Victoria! Margaret says... Ruby Toosday aka Reddyn has brought much needed joy back into my life!!! I don’t know who looks happier!
Here in Regina littermates Jigsaw and Soleil unexpectedly met up!
